Whoever built our house in 1920 had no idea that the code for staircases might someday change. It looks even narrower than it is because the ceiling at the top of the stairs is about 14 feet high. What appears to be a window (notice the two moons?) is actually a hatch to get to the crawlspace above the bathroom and service the heat pump. (Fix-it people do not love this hatch, which you need a ladder to reach.)

The balusters and the handrail are painted in the same teal blue as the dining room's woodwork and the front door.
